TL;DR: LangChain gives engineers open-source frameworks to write their own agent loop on any model, with LangSmith for tracing, evals, and deployment. Claude Managed Agents is Anthropic's hosted harness: you configure a Claude agent and Anthropic runs the loop. Runtime is the finished harness for payment teams, across clouds, sandboxes, and models, with guardrails on money movement.

LangChain is the better fit for engineers who want to own the agent loop in open-source code, choose any model provider, and standardize on LangSmith for tracing, evals, and deployment. Claude Managed Agents is the better fit for engineers standardizing on Claude who would rather configure an agent than build the loop, sandbox, and tool execution themselves. Runtime is the AI agent harness for payment and fintech teams that would rather not build on either.

LangChain and Claude Managed Agents answer the same question in opposite ways: do you write the agent harness, or use the model maker's? Both are built for developers.

LangChain vs Claude Managed Agents at a glance

LangChain makes open-source agent frameworks and the LangSmith platform. LangChain gets an agent running with any model provider, LangGraph gives low-level control over agent workflows, and Deep Agents is an opinionated harness for long-running agents with planning, memory, and subagents. LangSmith adds Observability, Evaluation, Deployment, Sandboxes, and Fleet, a no-code agent builder. LangChain reports more than 350 million monthly open-source downloads.

Claude Managed Agents is Anthropic's pre-built, configurable agent harness on managed infrastructure, in public beta since April 8, 2026. You define an agent (Claude model, system prompt, tools, MCP servers, skills), an environment (an Anthropic-managed cloud sandbox or a self-hosted one), and sessions. Built-in tools cover bash, files, web search and fetch, and MCP, and memory stores, vaults, webhooks, scheduled runs, outcomes, and multiagent orchestration have been added since launch.

Your loop vs Anthropic's loop

LangChain. The value is in owning the code: how the agent plans, branches, retries, and hands off to people. LangGraph gives full control of that logic, and Deep Agents a strong default. Because the loop is yours, you can version it, test it, and move it between models and clouds.

Claude Managed Agents. The value is in not writing the loop. Anthropic tunes the harness for Claude, with prompt caching, compaction, and other optimizations built in. Outcomes let a separate grader check work against your rubric, and multiagent orchestration lets a lead agent delegate to specialists. You configure behavior; you don't own the code that runs it.

Models and vendor dependency

LangChain. Model-agnostic. It connects to OpenAI, Google, open-weight models, and Anthropic's Claude through the langchain-anthropic package. A LangGraph agent on Claude today can move to another provider tomorrow.

Claude Managed Agents. Claude models only, orchestrated on Anthropic's side. It is in beta on the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, and Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed). Choosing it is a decision to standardize on one model vendor for that workload.

Deployment, sandboxes, and data

LangChain. LangSmith Deployment runs agents as SaaS, in your own cloud (BYOC), or self-hosted, with self-hosted and hybrid options on Enterprise plans. Code execution runs in LangSmith Sandboxes, and LangSmith reports SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, and GDPR compliance.

Claude Managed Agents. Sessions run in an Anthropic-managed sandbox or a self-hosted sandbox. Self-hosting moves tool execution into your infrastructure, but orchestration stays with Anthropic. Anthropic's docs say Managed Agents is not currently eligible for Zero Data Retention or HIPAA BAA coverage, including with self-hosted sandboxes.

Permissions and observability

LangChain. LangGraph supports human-in-the-loop interrupts, and Fleet can require approval for sensitive actions through an agent inbox, with admin and access controls. LangSmith tracing and evaluation are widely used, including for agents not built on LangChain.

Claude Managed Agents. Permission policies set server-executed tools to always allow, always ask (the session pauses for a human), or auto (the server evaluates each call and runs it, denies it, or pauses). The built-in toolset defaults to always allow and MCP tools default to always ask. Custom tools are outside permission policies, and vaults keep credentials out of the session.

On both, deciding which payment actions need a human and who approves is your team's design work.

Pricing

LangChain's frameworks are free and open source. LangSmith has a free Developer plan (one seat, up to 5k base traces a month), Plus at $39 per seat per month (up to 10k base traces, one free small deployment), and custom Enterprise pricing. Usage beyond that is pay as you go, and model usage is paid to your provider.

Claude Managed Agents bills tokens at standard Claude API rates plus $0.08 per session-hour while a session is running, with idle time free. Web search is $10 per 1,000 searches.

On both, the engineering time to build approvals, audit export, and an interface for ops teams is not on the price list.

Where Runtime enters the picture

Runtime is the AI agent harness for payment and fintech teams. LangChain leaves the platform to your engineers; Claude Managed Agents ties it to one model vendor. Neither ships the operations layer: agents ops teams build themselves, approvals before money moves, PCI and PII stripping, and an audit export your sponsor bank will accept. Building that is the two quarters of plumbing before the first agent touches real data.

Take a payout held for review. On Runtime an agent pulls the merchant balance, recent disputes, and hold reason from the ledger, the processor, and the ticketing system, drafts the decision, and waits for an approver in Slack before the payout moves. It can use Claude for the reasoning, and if that provider is down, it routes to another model and keeps working.

  • No single vendor to depend on. Agent computers run in your AWS, GCP, or Azure account or fully self-hosted, with your own sandbox provider and fallbacks. Models route across Claude, GPT, Gemini, and open-weight models, and harnesses across Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode.
  • Guardrails you set. Read-only by default, approvals before money moves, RBAC, masked credentials, card numbers and SSNs stripped from prompts and logs, and every run recorded end to end.
  • Built for teams. Shared agents, templates, and one memory across support, payment ops, finance, risk, and compliance.
  • An engineer, not an account executive. A forward-deployed AI engineer who built payment systems at Hulu's payments team at Disney, Finix, Modern Treasury, or BlackRock builds the first agents with your team. Rain saved $750k in vendor and salary spend with Runtime, which it uses across technical support, fraud and risk monitoring, compliance, cybersecurity, engineering investigations, PR reviews, QA testing, and reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Claude models with LangChain?

Yes. LangChain connects to Anthropic's Claude models through the langchain-anthropic package and its ChatAnthropic class. The difference from Claude Managed Agents is who runs the loop: your code, or Anthropic.

Is Claude Managed Agents open source?

No. Claude Managed Agents is a hosted service you reach through Anthropic's API, CLI, and SDKs, in beta behind the managed-agents-2026-04-01 header. LangChain, LangGraph, and Deep Agents are open source; LangSmith is LangChain's paid platform.

Which is faster to get a first agent running?

Claude Managed Agents usually, because you define an agent, an environment, and a session and Anthropic provides the loop, sandbox, and tool execution. LangChain takes more setup, and in return your engineers control the loop and the model.

How do LangChain and Claude Managed Agents pricing compare?

LangChain's frameworks are free. LangSmith has a free Developer plan, Plus at $39 per seat per month, and custom Enterprise pricing, with model usage paid to your provider. Claude Managed Agents bills Claude tokens at standard API rates plus $0.08 per session-hour while a session is running.

Where does Runtime fit next to LangChain and Claude Managed Agents?

Both are tools for engineers. Runtime is the finished harness payment ops, risk, compliance, and finance teams use, with approvals before money moves, a full audit trail, and agent computers in your cloud or self-hosted. It routes across Claude, GPT, Gemini, and open-weight models, so you can keep Claude without depending on one vendor.
