TL;DR: These serve different audiences. Dots is a finished personal agent for an individual inside ChatGPT; Claude Managed Agents is a developer platform for building Claude agents into your own products. Each ties you to one model vendor. Runtime is the multi-cloud, multi-model harness for payment teams, with guardrails and shared agents across teams.

People compare OpenAI Dots and Claude Managed Agents because both shipped in 2026, both give an agent its own computer in the cloud, and both run long tasks without someone watching. They serve different audiences, though. Dots is an end-user agent you switch on inside ChatGPT. Claude Managed Agents is a developer platform you build on.

OpenAI Dots vs Claude Managed Agents at a glance

OpenAI Dots are always-on personal agents in ChatGPT, launched at OpenAI DevDay on September 29, 2026. Each Dot runs on GPT-6 Astra with its own computer and browser in the cloud, keeps working toward your goals between conversations, uses the plugins you connect (more than 4,000 apps), and reaches you in ChatGPT, by voice, in Slack, or in Microsoft Teams when it needs a decision.

Claude Managed Agents is Anthropic's pre-built, configurable agent harness on managed infrastructure, in public beta since April 8, 2026. Developers define an agent (Claude model, system prompt, tools, MCP servers, skills), an environment (an Anthropic-managed sandbox or a self-hosted one), and sessions, then stream events back into their own application. Memory stores, vaults, webhooks, outcomes, and multiagent orchestration have been added since launch.

Audience and product scope

OpenAI Dots. A finished product for one person. You give it a goal, and it researches, analyzes data, prepares documents, or builds software, then checks in when it needs you. At launch each eligible user gets one Dot, and its memory is built from that user's conversations, ChatGPT memory, and its own notes.

Claude Managed Agents. Infrastructure for engineers. There is no end-user interface: you build the product, and the platform runs the agent loop, the sandbox, tool execution, and state. Anthropic names customers such as Notion, Rakuten, Asana, Sentry, and Atlassian building on it.

Controls and data

OpenAI Dots. Built-in safeguards and an automatic review check actions that affect your accounts or share information. Each user can set custom rules: act without asking, act when told, ask first, or hand off. A monitoring system can pause or stop a Dot. In Enterprise, Dots are off until an admin enables them. OpenAI says it does not train models directly on a Dot's proactive research or private notes.

Claude Managed Agents. Permission policies per tool (always allow, always ask, or auto), credential vaults, and session tracing in the Console. Self-hosted sandboxes keep files, processes, and network egress in your infrastructure, while orchestration and tool inputs and outputs still go through Anthropic. Anthropic's docs say it is not currently eligible for Zero Data Retention or HIPAA BAA coverage.

Models and infrastructure

OpenAI Dots. OpenAI's model on OpenAI's cloud computer. The tight integration is the point; there is no model choice or bring-your-own infrastructure.

Claude Managed Agents. Claude models only, on the Claude API or Claude Platform on AWS. Sandboxes can be Anthropic-managed or self-hosted, with published guides for AWS Lambda MicroVMs, Cloudflare, Daytona, E2B, Modal, Vercel, and GKE.

Pricing

OpenAI Dots. One Dot is included with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium at no extra cost, with an Enterprise beta. OpenAI plans to sell additional Dots and more capacity later; those prices are not published.

Claude Managed Agents. Tokens at standard Claude API rates plus $0.08 per session-hour while a session is running. Web search is $10 per 1,000 searches.

Where Runtime fits

Both leave the same gap for a payment company. Dots helps one person; Claude Managed Agents gives engineers parts to build with. Neither is a governed place where payment ops, risk, compliance, finance, and support run shared agents on money, and each ties you to one model vendor.

Runtime is the AI agent harness for payment and fintech teams. It is multi-cloud (your AWS, GCP, or Azure, or self-hosted), multi-sandbox (bring your own provider, with fallbacks), and multi-model (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, open-weight), with harness routing across Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode. If a provider has an outage, changes pricing, or deprecates a model, agents keep running. Guardrails are yours: read-only by default, approvals before money moves, RBAC, masked credentials, card numbers and SSNs stripped from prompts and logs, and a full record of every run for your sponsor bank. It is built for teams, with shared agents, templates, and memory across support, payment ops, finance, risk, and compliance, and a forward-deployed AI engineer who has built payment systems. Rain replaced $250k in vendor spend with Runtime.

Which should you choose

  • Choose OpenAI Dots if you want a personal agent for research, writing, and analysis, and your team already lives in ChatGPT.
  • Choose Claude Managed Agents if your engineers are building Claude agents into a product and want Anthropic to run the harness and sandbox.
  • Choose Runtime if payment ops, risk, compliance, or finance need shared agents on real queues, with guardrails on money movement and no dependency on one cloud, sandbox, or model vendor.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenAI Dots a competitor to Claude Managed Agents?

Not directly. Dots is an end-user product: a personal agent inside ChatGPT. Claude Managed Agents is a developer platform: an API for building and running Claude agents in your own applications. They are compared because both give an agent its own cloud computer and run long tasks in the background.

Which is better for building a customer-facing agent?

Claude Managed Agents. It is an API with sessions, events, permission policies, memory stores, and self-hosted sandboxes, designed to sit behind your own product. Dots is a personal agent for the ChatGPT user who owns it.

Which is better for personal productivity?

Dots. It works out of the box in ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams, keeps working between conversations, and uses the apps you connect. Claude Managed Agents needs engineering work before anyone can use it.

Can I use Claude and OpenAI models together?

Not within either product: Dots runs on GPT-6 Astra and Claude Managed Agents runs Claude models. Runtime routes across Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and open-weight models, and across Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode, with fallbacks.
