AI Agents for Adyen Operations
How payment ops teams use AI agents on Adyen: prepare dispute defenses, reconcile settlement batches from Adyen reports, and triage case management reviews, with scoped API roles and approvals.
AI agents can take the evidence gathering and matching work in Adyen operations: preparing chargeback defenses from the Disputes API, reconciling settlement batches from Adyen's reports, and summarizing case management reviews before they expire. They connect through Adyen's APIs, webhooks, report downloads, and MCP server, use API credentials scoped to one role each, and leave dispute decisions, refunds, and payouts to a person. Runtime is the AI agent harness for payment and fintech teams, and it runs these agents with the controls a regulated ops team needs.
This guide is for payment ops, risk, and finance leads at merchants and platforms on Adyen. Everything below about Adyen comes from Adyen's public documentation. Runtime has no official integration or partnership with Adyen; agents reach it through the same public interfaces your engineers use.
The ops work on Adyen that agents can take
| Queue | What the agent does | What stays human |
|---|---|---|
| Requests for information | Gathers transaction and order details and drafts the response | Sending it |
| Notifications of chargeback and chargebacks | Retrieves applicable defense reasons, gathers evidence, uploads draft defense documents | Choosing to defend or accept, and the final submission |
| Settlement reconciliation | Matches settlement batches to bank deposits and transaction-level lines to the ledger | Approving entries and closing the period |
| Case management reviews | Summarizes the payment, risk signals, and customer history for each case | Accept or reject |
| Payouts on the balance platform | Tracks transfer status and explains failures | Initiating, retrying, or changing payouts |
How agents connect to Adyen
API. The Disputes API covers the dispute workflow: retrieve applicable defense reasons, supply and delete defense documents, defend, or accept. Platforms on Adyen's balance platform also have APIs for transfers and payouts.
Webhooks. Adyen sends events such as REQUEST_FOR_INFORMATION, NOTIFICATION_OF_CHARGEBACK, CHARGEBACK, MANUAL_REVIEW_ACCEPT, MANUAL_REVIEW_REJECT, and REPORT_AVAILABLE. Each one can start an agent run.
Reports. For settlement reconciliation, Adyen offers transaction-level reports (Settlement details), batch-level reports (Aggregate settlement details), and invoice-level reports (Payment accounting). Reports can be generated on a schedule and downloaded when the REPORT_AVAILABLE webhook arrives.
MCP. Adyen publishes an MCP server that runs locally with an Adyen API key. Its documentation lists support for the Checkout API and Management API, so it helps with payment and account lookups more than dispute or reporting work.
Browser. Some work lives in the Customer Area, for example case management under Risk & disputes. An agent can read those screens through a browser session with a scoped Customer Area user.
Credentials. Adyen API credentials carry roles. Create one credential per workflow: report download for reconciliation, API dispute management for disputes. Keep payment-processing and payout roles off investigation credentials.
Workflow: chargeback defense preparation
Adyen's dispute flow has stages: an optional request for information, a notification of chargeback that starts the defense period, the chargeback itself, and, if the issuer declines your defense, pre-arbitration or a second chargeback. Once defense documents are supplied and forwarded, nothing more can be changed. That is the line between the agent's work and the reviewer's.
When NOTIFICATION_OF_CHARGEBACK arrives, the agent calls the Disputes API for the applicable defense reasons and required document types, then collects those documents from your systems.
A notification of chargeback just arrived from Adyen. Retrieve the applicable defense reasons and the documents each one requires. Pull the order, delivery proof, customer communication, and terms accepted at checkout. Recommend a defense reason, upload draft defense documents, and post a summary in #disputes with the days left to defend and what's missing. Don't call defend or accept.
Adyen may auto-defend some disputes. The agent should check the dispute's status first and skip those.
Workflow: settlement batch reconciliation
Adyen pays out when a batch closes, on your configured payout frequency. Finance needs each batch matched to the bank deposit, and each line in the batch matched to the ledger.
The Settlement details report for yesterday is available. Download it, group lines by batch, and match each batch total to the bank deposit. Then match settled payments, refunds, chargebacks, and fees to our ledger. Explain every difference with the report lines behind it and draft any missing fee entries for finance to approve.
Start with the Aggregate settlement details report if you only need batch-to-bank matching, and add Settlement details when you need transaction-level fees and chargebacks.
Workflow: case management triage
Payments that match a custom risk rule with the Review action go to case management. Adyen's docs note that a case expires after seven calendar days if no one acts, and the default on expiry is to capture. A backlog becomes captured risk.
A new case is open in Adyen case management. Summarize the payment, the risk rules it triggered, the shopper's past payments and disputes, and any support tickets. Recommend accept or reject with the evidence, and note how many days remain before the case expires. Don't take the action.
Guardrails
- One role per credential. Report download for reconciliation agents, dispute management for dispute agents, and nothing that can move money.
- Approvals before money moves. Defend, accept, refunds, cancels, and payouts wait for a named person.
- Draft, then submit. Agents upload draft defense documents; a person reviews and submits.
- Verify webhooks. Validate Adyen's HMAC signatures before an event can start a run.
- Every run recorded. Trigger, API calls, reports used, approval, and result, kept for audit.
Where Runtime enters the picture
Adyen is a deep platform for processing, risk, and reporting. The agent work around it still needs a home: somewhere to run, access to the order system, bank, and ledger, and controls that satisfy your risk team. A single chargeback can be a support ticket, a recon break, and a risk review at the same time, and today three teams look at it in three tools.
Runtime is the AI agent harness for payment and fintech teams. Each agent works on its own isolated computer, reaches Adyen through its APIs, webhooks, reports, and MCP server, reaches your other systems through APIs, databases, and a browser, and is called from Slack, Teams, email, or the dashboard.
- No single vendor to depend on. Agents run in your AWS, GCP, or Azure account or fully self-hosted, with fallbacks across sandbox providers and models (Claude, GPT, Gemini, open-weight) and harness routing across Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode.
- Guardrails you set. Read-only by default, approvals before a defense, refund, or payout, RBAC, masked Adyen credentials, card data stripped from prompts and logs, and every run recorded.
- Built for teams. Payment ops, risk, finance, and support share agents, templates, and one memory, so a chargeback and the recon break it causes are one investigation with one record.
- An engineer, not an account executive. A forward-deployed AI engineer with a payments background (Hulu's payments team at Disney, Finix, Modern Treasury, BlackRock) builds the first agents with your team.

A realistic timeline
| Milestone | Typical time |
|---|---|
| First read-only Adyen agent running | Minutes on Runtime; days if you build the infrastructure yourself |
| Settlement reports downloaded and reconciled daily | First one to two weeks |
| Draft chargeback defenses ready for review | Two to three weeks |
| Case management summaries before expiry | Two to four weeks |
| First approved write action | After the read-only agents have earned trust |
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI agent defend Adyen chargebacks?
An agent can prepare the defense: read the dispute, call the Disputes API to retrieve the applicable defense reasons and required documents, gather the evidence from your systems, and upload defense documents. A person should review the case and make the final defendDispute or acceptDispute call, since once information is supplied the defense can no longer be changed.
Does Adyen have an MCP server?
Yes. Adyen publishes an MCP server that runs locally and authenticates with an Adyen API key. Its documentation lists support for the Checkout API and the Management API. Dispute and reporting work still goes through the Disputes API, webhooks, and report downloads.
How does an agent get Adyen settlement reports automatically?
Schedule the report in the Customer Area, subscribe to the REPORT_AVAILABLE webhook, and give the agent a Report Service API credential with the Merchant Report Download role. When the webhook arrives, the agent downloads the file from the URL it contains and starts reconciliation.
What permissions should an Adyen API credential for an agent have?
Only the roles the workflow needs. A reconciliation agent needs report download. A dispute agent needs the API dispute management role. Keep separate credentials per workflow, and keep payment and payout roles off credentials used for investigation.
Where does Runtime fit next to Adyen?
Adyen processes the payments and holds the dispute, settlement, and risk data. Runtime is the AI agent harness for payment and fintech teams: it runs agents on isolated computers that reach Adyen through its APIs, webhooks, reports, and MCP server, connect that data to your ledger, bank, and support tools, and wait for human approval before money moves. Runtime is not an Adyen product or partner integration.
